"The best catholic thinkers of today are, like Newman, passionately orthodox. A Chesterton, a Claudel, realise that it's not by surrender to the passing enthousiasms of an hour that you really move men, that you really win them. The minor poet appeals to the little group, the genius speaks in the common speech of man and reaches the heart of the universe. The Modernist was like the minor poet: when he spoke of the modern mind he was thinking of a little group of Biblical critics or immanentist philosophers. But the Faith has a common speech to the heart of all mankind..."

"The long siege is over. For the siege implied coherent and succesful human systems and a Church hemmed in and on the defensive. Today there are no such systems. Over against the Church stands chaos. The one great question that remains is wich shall prevail - chaos or the divine order eternally established by God."

Maisie Ward, Insurrection vs. Resurrection (1937).

"There was always a wall between us, but now it is crowned with glass. It is improbable that dissentions on such large questions as 'Mariolatry' and papal infallibility would have the same effect of social disintegration as a divergent outlook on the most personal of all questions "

David Mathew, Catholicism in England 1535-1935, portrait of a minority (1936). Opmerking nadat de Anglicaanse Kerk contraceptie toestond in de jaren '30

"If man is not the slave and creature of time, but its master and creator, the history also becomes a creative process. It does not repeat itself meaninglessly: it grows into organic unity with the growth of human experience. The past does not die; it becomes incorporated in humanity. And hence progress is possible, since the life of society and of humanity itself possesses continuity and the capacity for spiritual growth no less than the life of the individual."

Christopher Dawson, Enquiries into religion and culture (1933).

"We are faced with a spiritual conflict of the most acute kind, a sort of social schizophrenia wich divides the soul of society between a non-moral will to power served by inhuman techniques and a religious faith and a moral idealism wich have no power to influence human life. There must be a way to unity -a spiritual integration of culture- if mankind is to survive."

Christopher Dawson, Religion and culture (1948).

"Catholicism stands essentially for a universal order in wich every good and every truth of the natural or social order can finds a place... It is the catholic ideal to order the whole of life towards unity, not by the denial and destruction of the natural human values, but by bringing them into living relation with spiritual truth and spiritual reality."

"The attempt of the nineteenth century to prescribe spiritual ideals in literature and ethics, while refusing to admit the objective existence of a spiritual order, has endured in failure, and today we have to choose between the complete expulsion of the spiritual element from human life or its recognition as the very foundation of reality...

...In so far as the modern world accepts the latter alternative, it can no longer disregard the existence of the catholic solution, for catholicism is the great historic representative of the principle of the spiritual order -an order wich is not the creation of the human mind, but its ruler and creator."

Christopher Dawson, voorwoord van Jaques Maritain's Religion and culture (1931).

"Proust and Virginia Woolf are the products of a world which has been driven in on itself and condemned to self-conscious art because it has lost the pattern of God's planning. The loss of this sense means a loss of faith, and it has produced the exsessive concern with techniques and experiment that is so common today and has made the modern novel etiolated and narrow... [catholic novelist'] greatest temptation may be to overemphasise the pattern, but undoubtedly their infallible method will be to keep out of God's light and allow him to appear through their 'mirrorings', and the last thing they will worry about will be 'edification'."

Gerard Meath O.P. The catholic novel (1951).

"Communism or Fascism- they may be mutually destructive, but they are both expressions of distrust in the individualism which has made such a mess of the world. We are watching now, I fancy, the beginning of the end of an epoch wich started with the Renaissance and the Protestant Reformation and the discovery of America and the conception of England as a extra-European state."

Compton Mackenzie, West to north (1940).

"The rise of Socialism was not merely disastrous in itself, in that it harnessed many fine and disinterested minds to a false philosophy, but it also manoeuvred into the defense of the capitalist regime, almost the whole of those forces which should have been led in the attack of it."

Douglas Jerrold, The influence of Hilaire Belloc (1942)

If this was the plan - was it made by someone who likes us? And if so, why have 99.9% of all the other species that have ever been created already died out? And part of what plan was that?; If it is a plan or a design, the planner must be either very capricious - really toying with his creation; and/or very clumsy, very tinkering and fantastically wasteful - throw away 99.9% of what you've made; or very cruel and very callous; or just perhaps very indifferent; or some combination of all the above.

- Christopher Hitchens

Nog eentje dan in dezelfde categorie:

All of this could be part of a plan. There’s no way an atheist can prove it’s not. But it’s some plan, isn’t it, with mass destruction, pitiless extermination, annihilation going on all the time and all of this set in motion on a scale that’s absolutely beyond our imagination in order that the Pope can tell people not to jerk off.

Bene Gesserit litanie tegen angst

I must not fear.

Fear is the mind-killer.

Fear is the little-death that brings total obliteration.

I will face my fear.

I will permit it to pass over me and through me.

And when it has gone past I will turn the inner eye to see its path.

Where the fear has gone there will be nothing......Only I will remain.

NL vertaling (door M.K. Stuyter, 1974):
